Frequently Asked Questions – Coasteering

Below we have sought to answer as many common questions about our Coasteering Tours as possible, if however you find that the information you are looking for is not available here then please call us on 07881 335373, we will be more than happy to help with your enquiries.

Coasteering is an adventure activity that combines low level coastal traversing and sea swimming in order to explore our beautiful coastline. All our tours begin with small step off points to allow you to build your confidence in the sea before we set off to explore the various nooks and crannies of the coastline. Along the way we will swim through rapids, water sliders and whirlpools whilst keeping an eye out for the local marine life and taking in the wonderful scenery. Depending on the tide and time of year we will then explore smugglers caves before progressing on to the higher jumps and finishing on the 10m high cliff ledge!

On the day of your tour you will be met at our Coasteering HQ on Fistral Beach at a prearranged time. Following a brief introduction to Coasteering our expert instrcutors will run through a detailed safety briefing which covers:

  1. Correct entry and exit from the water.
  2. Rock Traversing Techniques.
  3. Climbing Techniques.
  4. Jumping Techniques.
  5. Current Sea Conditions.
  6. Safety Signals & Emergency Procedures.

After the safety briefing you will issued with warm winter wetsuits, buoyancy aids and safety helmets before heading off to the changing rooms. Once your belongings are secured it is then only a short walk to the beginning of our route and time for the Mad Ferret fun to begin!

With The Mad Ferrets you will spend a minimum of 2 hours exploring Newquay’s stunning coastline. However, due to varying group sizes and sea conditions this can sometimes be much longer and so we would advise that you allow at least 4 hours to complete the whole experience. This includes the introductions and safety briefing and allows time to get changed before and after your activity.

As with any outdoor adventure activity there are some risks involved, however at Mad Ferret Coasteering we have done all we can to minimise these risks. Our equipment is of the highest quality and is regularly checked for defects and replaced when necessary. Our highly experienced Coasteering Instructors are regularly tested and trained and up to date with all required qualifications.

In a word, no. This is because each tour can be personally tailored to your individual abilities and fitness levels and therefore your experience can be as mellow or extreme as you would like it to be. There is absolutely no pressure on anyone to tackle the higher jumps and all our tours have plenty of options to suit everyone. We also offer Family Group Tours and Private Coasteering Tours for even more peace of mind.

Absolutely not! Everything on our tour is entirely optional so if you would prefer to simply bob along in a wetsuit and buoyancy aid admiring the beautiful coastline The Mad Ferrets will be more than happy to accommodate.

Whilst we do require that all participants are able to swim at least 25 meters without stopping, this does not mean you have to be a strong swimmer. Once you are wearing the buoyancy aid you will find it extremely easy to float along without too much effort.

We provide you with warm winter wetsuits, buoyancy aids and safety helmets. All you need to bring along is a towel, your swimwear and some protective footwear, e.g. wetsuit boots or an old pair of trainers.
