Mad Ferret Coasteering was founded in 2006 by Mark Johnston and Tom Green, two Newquay locals with a combined ocean experience of over 60 years that includes surfing, coasteering, surf lifesaving and working as lifeguards on all of Newquay’s fantastic beaches.

We both feel very lucky to have grown up in Newquay and have spent many years exploring Cornwall’s stunning coastline. Our local knowledge is second to none and Coasteering is the perfect activity for us to share our skills and experience with others whilst having lots of fun along the way!”

Name: Mark “Johnny” Johnston.
Position: Co-founder and Senior Instructor.
Coasteering Speciality: The High Dive.

Mark JohnstonLearning to surf at 9 years of age Mark was a competitive surfer and part of Newquay’s local surf crew from the 80’s and 90’s. When the surf was flat Mark could often be found at Newquay’s harbour and cliff tops perfecting the style of his jumps and high dives. After many years spent surfing and coasteering all over the world Mark put his expert waterman knowledge to good use and began working as an RNLI Beach Lifeguard in Newquay. Mark proudly holds the accolade for being the first RLNI Beach Lifeguard to win an award for bravery, this achievement was further recognised by the Daily Express Life Saving awards which saw Mark attend a prestigious event in London followed by a personal thank you from the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
